Pre- and Post-Holi care tips
Tips to follow before playing Holi:
Skin:
The best way to avoid Holi colors from getting in direct contact with the skin is to layer it with an oil. Apply mustard/coconut oil on the face, neck, ears hands and legs before Holi. The colour can be removed from the skin more easily by doing this. To keep your skin safe from colours, try wearing clothes which cover the whole of your body to minimize the extent of direct exposure. The most ignored fact on holi day is using a Sunscreen. Apply a heavy layer of waterproof sunscreen 30 min before going out to save your skin from harmful sunrays.
Hair:
It is important to wear a scarf on your head or cover it with a smaller size dupatta or a stole. It is not advisable to keep your hair open. Tie it up so that a lesser area of your head is exposed to color. A night before Holi, take a head massage with a mixture of jojoba and rosemary oil or coconut oil. This will provide your hair with ample nutrition which gets dry due to the colors. Coat your hair with oil/ hair serum before playing holi to protect it from color.
Nails:
It’s a good idea to cut your nails short. It is advisable to apply a transparent nail varnish on the nails. This will help to protect the nails from absorbing the holi colors.
Eyes & Ears:
Do not play Holi while wearing your contact lenses. Sometimes, the color may get into your eyes and irritate it. Protecting your eyes from color is important.
Apply coconut/mustard oil over the ears to protect them from color. Use cotton plugs to prevent the color from entering the ears.
Tips to follow after playing Holi:
Skin:
It is advisable to keep washing the color off as and when possible. Once you are back home, wash the color off with plenty of water. Soak cotton wool in a gentle milk cleanser and dab it over your skin. Leave it on for five minutes and wipe it off with moist cotton wool. Then, take a bath with normal or lukewarm water. Use mild soap free cleansers to avoid further damage to the skin. After bath apply a good moisturizer to nourish the skin.
Hair:
After playing Holi, wash your hair with plenty of plain water so that most of the color comes off. Use a mild SLS free shampoo to wash the hair and follow it up with a good conditioner. A good hair mask may be used, it nourishes the damaged hair and makes it less frizzy.
Nails:
Use cool water to wash your nails. Use a nail polish remover to clean the transparent nail varnish. Then add a tablespoonful of almond oil and one table-spoonful of vinegar or lemon juice. Mix the ingredients well. Then, put your fingertips into the cup and soak for 15 minutes. Following this wash your hands with cold water. Use a hand cream to keep the skin soft and supple.
Eyes & Ears:
After washing off the color with water, drop some rose water in your eyes and rest. Your eyes will feel relaxed.
Wash your ears thorough with a mild soap free cleanser and ample water to remove the color.
